Lace Sock Workshop with Angela



Join us for a lace sock knitting workshop where you will learn the fundamental techniques of crafting a simple lace sock. Perfect for those new to the world of sock knitting or those of you who are interested in refining your sock knitting skills.  This class will provide hands-on guidance and foundational skills you'll need to take the mystery out of knitting a lace pattern on your socks.  By the end of this class, participants will have a solid understanding of knitting a simple lace sock, and with a bit of practice, you will be knitting them confidently. Whether you're knitting for yourself or as a heartfelt gift, this class will set you on a path to creating beautiful wearable art that fits comfortably.

Skills you will learn:

  • Introduction to Materials: Working yarn-overs, and possibly using a larger needle for the sock to account for the lace pattern. 

  • Anatomy of a Sock: Familiarize yourself with a simple lace sock pattern. 

  • Reading a Sock Pattern: Break down the Murmuration Sock pattern to understand its structure and instructions, and how this applies to the fit of the finished sock.

  • Cable Techniques: Look at using yarn-overs, ssks, and k2tog stitches to create the lace pattern.

  • Tips and Troubleshooting: Discuss common challenges faced by beginners and learn practical tips to overcome them. We will also discuss ways to help with the fit of the finished sock. . 


Skills you should already have:
Students should have previously completed a basic sock and have basic knitting skills including basic increases/decreases, working yarn overs, slipping stitches, etc.

Supplies to bring to class:
  • Pattern: Murmuration Sock pattern by Summer Lee, a pattern in her The Sock Project: Colorful, Cool Socks to Knit and Show Off book (Please note, if you do not already own this book, you have the option of purchasing the book with your class registration - select "Class plus materials" at checkout.)

  • Fingering weight sock yarn 100g (I would recommend you stay away from highly variegated or heavily speckled yarns)

  • Sock: a starter sock that has the cast on complete for your sock size. 

  • Needles: appropriate for your yarn, if you are a tight knitter, I recommend US 1.5 or 2, otherwise US 1. Participants can choose Magic Loop, DPNs, Flexi-needles Or 9” circulars. Please note: If using 9” circulars, you may want to have a second 9” or 12” circular to knit your heel. 

  • Notions: Stitch markers, ruler, tapestry needle, progress keeper or row counter
