Fleece to Skein: How Raw Wool Becomes Yarn Workshop with Erin

Curious about how wool goes from fleece shorn off the sheep to skein in the yarn shop? Join Erin for a fun lecture/demo workshop where she’ll walk through the whole process! Learn all about different sheep breeds, fleece styles, scouring (washing) methods, processing and spinning techniques. This workshop is for fiber lovers of all kinds, whether you’re a spinner who’s interested in learning how to process fleece or a knitter/crocheter/weaver who just wants to learn more about how yarn is made! While there will be no hands-on instruction, spinners who are interested can add a kit to take home and try out washing & processing themselves.

Skills you already need to have: Curiosity about how yarn is made!

What you will learn:

  • Sheep breeds & fleece styles - what comes off the sheep & how they are raised

  • Scouring/washing methods - how to get it all clean

  • Processing techniques - preparing wool for spinning

  • Spinning styles - how the method used affects the finished yarn

  • How to read that yarn label - what all that terminology means (ie, superwash, woolen-spun, what you can interpret from yardage vs skein weight, etc)

Materials to bring to the workshop: Pen & paper if you’re a note taker!

OPTIONAL kit add-on (for spinners who’d like to try out processing at home):
