Spinning 102 Workshop: Fractal Spinning with Erin

Have you looked at those pretty braids of hand-dyed fiber and thought, “What can I do with those?” One option is a fractal spin! Learn how to create a fun “color-shifting” skein of two-ply yarn with this intermediate spinning technique. (Insider info: This is how Spincycle yarns are created!) In this workshop you’ll learn how fractal spinning works, how to select a braid suitable for fractal spinning, and how to divide your fiber for your spin. You’ll also get a chance to start on your first single, and leave with the knowledge to finish your skein.

Skills you already need to have: You’ll need to be comfortable spinning singles and plying (at least a two-ply yarn). This is not a beginning spinning class.

Skills you will learn:

  • Understand how fractal yarns are created

  • Recognize what makes a hand-dyed braid a good candidate for fractal spinning

  • Divide your braid and prepare for your spin

  • Discuss skein plying and finishing (will complete at home after the workshop)

Materials to bring to the workshop:

  • 4 oz of hand-dyed fiber, combed top or pulled roving (no batts or rolags), any fiber content - the more multi-colored, the better!

  • Students MUST bring their own spinning wheel (in good working order) or spindle - this should be equipment you are familiar with and comfortable using. Wheel users will need 3 bobbins. Spindle users will need their preferred method for winding off two balls of singles for plying.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details:
Requirements: Must have basic spinning skills - singles & plying. Students must bring own equipment (wheel or spindle) to the workshop.
