Knitting 102: My First Hat with Pam



In this class, you will use the beginner knitting techniques you’ve already learned to complete your first hat. You will also learn how to knit in the round, and to work simple cables to create the textured design of the hat. These cables can be worked with or without a cable needle, and you’ll receive instruction on both options.

The pattern includes directions for sizes Newborn through Adult L. You may find you’ll want to make one for everyone in the family!

Skills you already need to have: Cast on/bind off, knit and purl

Students will learn the following techniques:

  • Pattern reading

  • Chart reading

  • Knitting in the round

  • Invisible join for knitting in the round

  • Two stitch cables…can be worked with or without cable needle

  • Body of hat is knit in-the-round on 16” circulars, and the crown is finished with double pointed needles or a longer circular using magic loop

  • Weaving in ends

Materials to bring to the first class:
  • Pattern- Feather Brushed Hat by Rachel Kleynhans (available on Ravelry or at Dances With Wool)

  • Yarn- 69 - 183 yds DK Weight (depending on size selected)

  • Needles-

    • US4 16” circulars

    • US6 16” circulars

    • US6 double pointed needles or US6 32” circulars (if you wish to learn Magic Loop)

  • Stitch marker

  • Cable needle if you would like to learn cabling WITH a cable needle

  • Darning needle
