Spinning 102: Spinning with Color in Hand-dyed Fibers

Have you looked at those pretty braids of hand-dyed fiber and wondered, "Those colors are so gorgeous, how do I spin them?" In this class we will explore three different methods of spinning and plying and how each plays with color: traditional three-ply (barber pole), fractal spinning, and chain plying. Learn how to visualize the possibilities while shopping for dyed fiber, as well as some tips and tricks for drafting and plying!

This class is intended for the advanced beginner or intermediate spinner, comfortable with spinning singles and plying. Students need to own a piece of spinning equipment that can be transported to the shop - spindle, spinning wheel, e-spinner, etc.

Students will need to do some spinning "homework" outside of class time.

Skills you will learn:

  • Traditional three-ply (barber pole)

  • Fractal spinning

  • Chain plying

Students will need to bring to class:

  • Spinning equipment you are familiar & comfortable with - spindle, wheel, or e-spinner is fine

  • Multiple bobbins or storage/winding options for singles

  • Lazy Kate or other tool to hold bobbins/balls for plying

  • 4 oz braid of hand-dyed fiber, the more multi-colored/variegated the better!

Optional but helpful:

  • Niddy Noddy for winding off sample skeins

  • Scissors

  • Tags/bags for labeling sample skeins

  • Notebook/pen

Class can be offered as a hybrid class with virtual attendance - virtual students must be confident spinners!
